Protein Powder- Which Type Is Best?

There are a huge amount of protein powders on the market these days and a lot of people have no idea what they’re taking and why they’re taking it! There is so much information I could give you about protein and protein powders, but I am just going to keep it simple today.

First of all, food is best! I only use and recommend protein powders if a client is having a lot of smoothies and/or juices as main meals, or if they’re training a lot and struggle to get enough good quality protein. 

There are many types of protein powders, here are some examples-

  • Whey (different types e.g. isolate, concentrate etc)- One of the most common and basic forms of protein. It can be inexpensive, but the best quality grass fed, organic whey, free from artificial sweeteners (which is what I would recommend) can be expensive. Whey is a great source of protein and amino acids, but there are also many more benefits. There are numerous studies that show whey can actually boost your immune system, lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation and enhance the body’s antioxidant defences. This all sounds great, but make sure it is GOOD QUALITY! NO artificial sweeteners or other artificial ingredients (it may even still be called natural, when it isnt! So look at the ingredients).
  • Pea- usually made from yellow split peas. It’s low in carbs and is a great source of essential amino acids.
  • Hemp- made from hemp seeds, this is one of the most complete and nutritious protein sources on the planet! It contains all the essential amino acids, as well as omega 3 fats. 
  • Soy- This is a good source of protein, but I don’t recommend it due to its oestrogen and goitrogenic effects. Fermented soy however if very different but I have never found a fermented soy protein powder.
  • Brown rice- 98% correlation to mothers milk and a 97% correlation with whey protein. This is one of natures most complete and readily digested protein sources, with a good balance of essential amino acids.

But which brand is best?

Once you have figured out which type of protein powder you want to use, the next issue is which brand! This can be even more tricky, as there are so many, and they are not all equal. Many people opt for MyProtein as it’s cheap, specialises in protein (hence the title) and it tends to be first on google! I’m not so keen! Many of their powders have artificial sweeteners and it’s not great quality. 

Below are some brands I like and use-

  • Pulsin’- 100% natural powders with no artificial ingredients, plus affordable. They sell all different types of proteins, so you can choose which one you’d prefer.
  • Sunwarrior - I love Sunwarriors’ powders. They do a classic blend which is just brown rice protein, or a couple of other blends which are a mix of different types of protein, so you get the benefit from them all. They have different flavours which is nice, but sweetened with stevia, which a lot of people don’t like! So maybe try a sample first!
  • PinkSun- This company sells organic, grass fed, natural whey protein, and it’s not too expensive.
  • Good Hemp- Good quality hemp protein powders.

The type of protein you choose is quite individual. If you can afford a good quality whey and you feel ok with it, then that’s great. However, I find whey bloats me and I like to stay away from all forms of cows dairy, so I like to use a plant based powder. If I was going on health and protein quality, I would choose hemp protein, but it doesn’t taste great! Which is fine if you’re always going to mix it with other things, but on it’s own, its pretty horrible! So I use Sunwarrior. I like all their blends and often have different types at home to mix and match them!

Orange and Almond Cake

Orange and Almond Cake

 

  • 225g ground almonds
  • 2 whole oranges
  • 6 eggs separated
  • 200g xylitol  
  1. Simmer the whole oranges in a saucepan of water for 1 hour.
  2. Cut the oranges in half and remove the pips.
  3. Blend the oranges in a food processer with the egg yolks.
  4. Mix the ground almonds with the xylitol and add in the egg yolk-orange mixture. 
  5. Whisk the egg white until stiff, and fold into the mixture. 
  6. Line a cake tin with grease proof paper, then pour in the mixture. 
  7. Bake for 1 hour at 180’C or until the testing knife comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool down, and remove from the in. Sprinkle with coconut flour (optional)
  9. Enjoy! :-)

Healthy Chicken Goujons

This is the first none vegetarian recipe on my website! Although most of my food is vegan and plant based, I do eat meat. However, I am very picky about where I get my meat from! I like to know what it has been fed and the quality of life the animal has had. As I buy such good quality meat, naturally it is much more expensive! Because of this, and because I believe in a more plant based lifestyle, I only eat meat on average twice a week. I get my meat from a local organic farm shop (Manor Farm) in Long Whatton, Leicestershire.

This is a great recipe for when friends come over, or for a lazy Saturday night watching a film with the family!

Serves 2

  • 2 organic chicken breasts cut into strips
  • 100g gluten free bread 
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • pinch himalayan salt or sea salt
  • 1 tbsp paprika 
  • 2 eggs- beaten
  • 2 tbsp rice flour or gluten free flour
  1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees.
  2. In a food processor, add the garlic, bread, salt and paprika and blitz until fine breadcrumbs are made.
  3. Place the beaten eggs, breadcrumbs, flour and chicken all in 4 separate bowls.
  4. One at a time, dip the chicken into the flour, then the egg, then the breadcrumbs. Make sure they are thoroughly coated.
  5. Place them in a baking dish and bake for 25-30min, or until golden brown.
  6. Enjoy with sweet potato chips and salad :-)
